Stunningly Relevant for May 2023 from May 1973

"If we should suffer a medical emergency, we take for granted that our community will be able to provide the medical services we need. We assume that somebody - possibly a passer-by - would be able to give proper first aid and to summon help. We assume that the ambulance attendants would be well-trained and able to aid us en route to the hospital. Unfortunately, in far too many American communities, our assumption would be false."

It is stunning how this article has such relevant and present insights from 50 years ago to the month. It's as if Dr. Huntley had the clearest of crystal balls seeing our emergency care system in 2023 while we're still climbing out of a pandemic.

Reflecting on EMS week, someone calling for emergency medical help will tell you that EMS is an "Essential Service." It can be a life or death essential service. How can this even be a debate?

Thanks to the commitment of emergency medical dispatchers at 911 Public Safety Answering Points, EMTs and paramedics, emergency nurses, emergency physicians, and so many others who are committed to and supportive of a better emergency care system.

And a special thanks to those members of the public who have taken the time to know CPR + AED, and Stop the Bleed. Save Lives. Build Resilience.
